   亨德尔（George Frideric Handel）1685—1759生于德国中部的哈雷镇。他并非为音乐世家的子弟，他的父亲是一名宫廷理发师和外科医生希望小亨德尔学习法律，成为有名的律师在社会拥有好的地位。扎豪是哈雷镇的教堂乐正，是一位作曲家和管风琴家，发现小亨德尔才华横溢，成为了亨德尔音乐启蒙老师。在扎豪的指导下，亨德尔成为一位技艺高超的管风琴家和羽管键琴家，还学习小提琴和双簧管，在对位法方面打下了坚实的基础，并且在这期间通过抄谱子熟悉了德国和意大利作曲家的音乐风格。
1702年亨德尔按父亲的遗愿考入哈雷大学法律系就读；且被任命为大教堂的管风琴师。不久，亨德尔离开了大学来到汉堡（当时德国的歌剧中心）在歌剧院任小提琴手，同时从事歌剧的创作。19岁创作了第一部歌剧《阿尔米拉》，1705年在汉堡歌剧院首演。年轻的亨德尔在这里交友较广，有歌剧院院长、作曲家凯塞尔及作曲家、理论家、管风琴家马特松。在这里他发觉歌剧的创作受到传统和贵族势力的干扰，于是便到了意大利。
1706—1710年，亨德尔与罗马、威尼斯、那不勒斯、佛罗伦萨的一些著名的音乐家交往，从事演奏和创作，并且研究了科雷利、斯卡拉蒂的意大利音乐风格。很快亨德尔被认为最有前途的年轻作曲家之一，在意大利期间对亨德尔的以后事业起到了决定性的作用。在这几年里他主要创作拉丁经文歌、一部清唱剧、大量的意大利康塔塔和歌剧。此时的亨德尔的风格基本上已经形成，他基于扎豪、成熟于科雷利、斯卡拉蒂，为他去汉诺威就任选帝侯宫廷乐正奠定了基础。
亨德尔来到汉诺威只不过小插曲，他就马上转到英国发展。他的歌剧《里纳尔多》作为见面礼献给英国观众，引起了一时的轰动，成为他在英国取得地位和知名度的一张名片。亨德尔得到了王室、勋爵、公爵以及一些有权有势人物的赞助，在英国伦敦得以安顿，也成为事业平步青云的有利保障。来伦敦的前十年亨德尔基本上活动在贵族宅邸、富商家中及歌剧院演奏管风琴和羽管键琴，还是活跃在宫廷的外围。当时浦塞尔的歌剧主导着英国的歌剧界，亨德尔潜心研究他的音乐，不仅深入地了解作曲技巧和风格，而且从他的作品里掌握英国贵族审美需求，为亨德尔进军宫廷是大有脾益的。
意大利歌剧正风靡一时，有60位贵族富商出资于1718-1719年组建了一联合专业剧团，称为皇家音乐学院，专门为伦敦的观众上演歌剧。此剧团邀请亨德尔和两位意大利人担任作曲，可想而知亨德尔在英国音乐界已取得的成就。皇家音乐学院在1720-1728年间盛极一时，对英国的音乐界产生了极大的影响。在这期间亨德尔创作了最佳的歌剧《拉达米斯托》、《啊德米托》《罗德米达》等。1728年由该易和佩普什创作的《乞丐歌剧》在伦敦首演获得的巨大成功。《乞丐歌剧》采用大家熟悉的英国民间曲调，表现人民日常生活的场景，受到了进步人士和广大市民的喜欢和支持，并且用他们的母语英语演唱。英国观众开始厌倦意大利风格的歌剧，因此皇家音乐学院的经济开始拮据，面临着破产，然而亨德尔以作曲家和企业家的身份与人合伙接手这家歌剧院。1737这家歌剧院基本上面临破产，同时也是亨德尔创作风格和方向开始转型的时候。他很清楚意大利歌剧在英国已经不再拥有昔日的地位，他一再的失败，从而寻找突破点，开始创作清唱剧《扫罗》，1739年演出了6次，反应极佳。随着另一清唱剧《以色列人在埃及》的问世，一圣经题材为依据并带合唱的亨德尔式清唱剧开始定型。
亨德尔一生创作26部清唱剧，这些作品中最为人所熟悉的《弥塞亚》（意为救主基督）是他树立为丰碑的重要原因。《弥塞亚》的脚本是他的好友剧作家查理•詹宁斯（Mr. Jenmens 1700～1773）所写。他是伦敦当时相当富有的人，他以写文章及剧本为至高之乐趣，并充满达到顶尖的雄心。他自认是当时最杰出的剧作能手，饱读莎士比亚的剧作，对于许多古典文学作品也涉猎广泛。亨德尔在1725 年开始与他成为好友，发现詹氏对他的音乐了解至深而相当惊讶，后来就采用了詹氏的脚本写清唱剧，如「扫罗王」及「伯沙撒王」等，而「弥赛亚」则是詹氏心目中精心的作品，不过，他大概做梦也没有想到它会成为万世留芳的脚本（甚至有人曾说它是「前古无人，后无来者」的杰作），与亨德尔同被歌颂，永不褪色。
以意大利正歌剧起家的亨德尔在音乐界的地位受到前所未有的冲击，歌剧上演屡遭失败，同时面临着经济上的压力。此时的亨德尔面对昔日的成就光环与今日的遭遇，心理落差极大几乎使他心灵崩溃。不幸的亨德尔在1773年中风偏瘫，事业蒸蒸日上的他此时才真正感受到人是多么的脆弱。外向型的亨德尔开始内省，他开始思考生命存在的价值与意义。鲜花掌声和荣耀的光环对于生命本身又有何益处呢？这一切都即将过去，残留的只不过是一个取死的身体。斗志昂扬的亨德尔面对自己这副躯体，无助的彪汗发现《弥塞亚》脚本给他带来无比的振奋。那时起《弥塞亚》脚本拌他度过了一生中最难熬的时刻，此脚本成为了他的灵修小品，给他源源不断的生命力量。以前或许未对救主「弥赛亚」缺乏真正了解透彻的亨德尔，现在深深体会到「救主」的真实性；而当他感动之余，流畅的乐笔源源不断谱出圣乐；当中许多写作的技巧，实在也是得力于以前不断写歌剧的磨练。这又让他了解到：基督徒的人生不一定都是顺遂的，重要的是能记取「失败」的经验，转眼向上帝重新得力，而后重新起步为他而活。此时才是亨德尔的生命真正的转折和改变时期，让他知道了生命的归属和灵魂的皈依。
陶渊明词句“连林人不觉，独树众乃奇”。亨德尔的《弥塞亚》犹如他清唱剧中的一株独树，除《弥塞亚》之外以圣经题材的其他清唱剧作品，都是借用圣经中一个具体的英雄式人物来贯穿整个剧本。然而，《弥塞亚》中的这位弥塞亚却贯穿整本圣经，从旧约到新约，涉及的经文之多是任何一部清唱剧都无法比拟的。这位弥塞亚在旧约中是上帝向以色列民族预言的拯救者，让以色列民期盼了几千年，以耶稣（也就是以色列民盼望的弥塞亚）降生成为了人类历史的风水岭。《弥塞亚》跨越整本圣经所涉及的历史时空，也将弥塞亚对以色列的拯救天衣无缝的用音乐表现出来。
亨德尔只用了24天的时间完成了所有的乐曲和乐队配器，在他创作的过程中经常感动的热泪盈眶，泪水浸湿了手稿。《弥塞亚》是充满灵感的作品，当写第四十四首《哈利路亚》的时候曾双膝跪倒在地、双手向天，喊著说：“我看到天门开了”。亨德尔万分的感动之余，本想借此赚钱的念头也打消掉了。在爱尔兰首都都柏林首演时，海报上这样写着：“为了一些困苦的囚犯，以及梅尔舍医院的利益”而演出。在3月27日预演时，大家都非常感动，为了达到慈善演奏的最高效果（希望多些人入座），宣传单上注明妇女们不穿蓬裙、男人不佩带剑。4月13日首演果然引起轰动。次年在伦敦演出的时候，英王乔治二世亲临剧院，当演奏到《哈利路亚》时，英王按捺不住内心的激动，站起来听完了《哈利路亚》全曲。从此人们站着听《哈利路亚》成了不成文的规矩。
《弥塞亚》的内容是依据基督的降生、受难、被钉死在十字架及复活而写成的。作品分为三部分：
第一部分：基督降临的预言及他的诞生。序曲囊括了整个作品发展的乐思，音乐出来非常的庄严，体现基督的崇高和神圣，第二段转入稍慢的快板（Allegro moderato）预示基督即将来临及人们内心无比的欢喜。第二首到十二首讲述基督降生的目的以及预备。安慰、安慰我的百姓，拯救在黑暗中摸索的人。这位拯救以色列的弥塞亚，因圣灵感孕由童真女马利亚所生。当天使在旷野向牧羊人显象的时候，十三首《田园间奏曲》响起，描绘了一副如诗的画面。接着就是天使歌颂弥塞亚的降临和报喜信给以色列民。
第二部分：救赎的信息及基督为全人类的牺牲。弥塞亚的降临给人类带来的希望，然而人们活在罪恶与过犯里，不愿接受这这位救主。以色列民以为这位弥塞亚，带来的是强大的政zh i国度，拯救他们脱离罗马人的统治。弥塞亚的降临却是医治他们心灵的伤痕，引导他们走出迷失的方向。他被藐视、被弃绝最终被钉四死在十字架上。在人看来他是彻底的失败，然而，他却以爱征服了全人类。十字架神学就是吊诡的神学，虽然他被钉死，但是他已经得胜了。第二部分以合唱
《哈利路亚》（哈利路亚意为你们要赞美耶和华，见诗篇150篇句首）结束。
第三部分：基督战胜死亡及最终的审判。第三部分的第一首《我知道我的救赎主活着》是整个作品最有名的咏叹调（女高音）。这首以约伯记19：25—26（我知道我的救赎主活着，末了必要站在地上。我这皮肉灭绝之后，我必在肉体之外得见神）为脚本。向死亡宣告、向罪恶得胜。第五十首歌词为：死啊！你得胜的权势在那里？死啊！你的毒钩在那里？死的毒钩就是罪，罪的权势就是律法。感谢神，使我们藉着主耶稣基督得胜。（哥林多前书15：55—17）以合唱《阿们颂》结束了《弥塞亚》全曲。
亨德尔的《弥塞亚》是被全世界人们颂唱最多的，当然，《弥塞亚》也是清唱剧中最优秀的。亨德尔对清唱剧主要的贡献就是合唱应用，他合唱风格的宏大特点将《弥塞亚》复杂与非个人性的场景描绘的恰到好处。也造就了《弥塞亚》在音乐史上不可动摇的地位。

曾被杀的羔羊，用自己的血买了人来归于上帝，是配得权柄、丰富、智慧、能力、尊贵、荣耀、颂赞的。颂赞、尊贵、荣耀、权势都归给坐宝座的和羔羊，直到永永远远。阿们！
